University Safety & Health Manual Training

The training modules below are specific to University Safety & Health manual requirements on the KU-Lawrence Campus.  At the end of each module is a self-test. Hopefully, these will help you better understand and comply with the requirements of our manual and document appropriate USHM training.

  • (EHS TM 00) -- KU-EHS Dept. Overview
  • (EHS TM 01) -- EHS Hazard Awareness
    • (Revised January 2009 -- includes online quiz)
  • (EHS TM 10) -- General Campus Safety and Emergency Procedures
  • (EHS TM 11) -- Ergonomics (repetitive motions over extended periods of time)
  • (EHS TM 12) -- Safety in the Use of Hand/Power Tools and Bench-top Power Equipment
    • Study TM 12 and/or USHM 10, 11, & 12.
    • Note: If only hand tools are to be used, EHS Safety 12a may be designated and TM 12 Chapter 3 covering power tools may be omitted. Chapters 1 and 2 are required.
  • (EHS TM13) -- Welding/Cutting/Brazing Safety
  • (EHS TM 14) -- Spray Painting, Epoxy Resins, Cutting Oils, Emulsions, Cement, Lead etc.
  • (EHS TM 15) -- Chemical Hazard Communication & Safety (non-lab environment)
  • (EHS TM 16) -- Safety in Shipping and/or Receiving Hazardous Materials
    • Contact EHS for training.
  • (EHS TM 17) -- Blood Borne Pathogens
    • (Revised January 2009 -- includes online quiz)
  • (EHS TM 18) -- Lab Safety Awareness  - Lab Safety and Animal Care Orientation. REVISED 08/22/2008!
    • Must also contact the Animal Care Unit, BO54 Malott Hall, Phone # 864 5587 for required animal orientation training and documentation.
  • (EHS TM 19) -- Safety for Non-Lab Personnel Accessing and/or Working in Laboratories
    • Study TM 19 and/or Appendix A. p1-3 of the USHM
  • (EHS TM 20) -- Confined Space Safety
  • (EHS TM 21) -- Safety in Maintenance and Storage Yards
  • (EHS TM 22) -- Safety in Food Services Operations
  • (EHS TM 23) -- Grounds Maintenance Safety
  • (EHS TM 24) -- Field Construction Safety
  • (EHS TM 25) -- Housekeeping Safety
  • (EHS TM 26) -- Radiation Safety (for non-lab employees with assignments in rooms with radiation sources).
    • Study USHM section 21.
    • Consult with EHS Radiation Safety Services
  • (EHS TM 27) -- Safety in the use of Chain Saws and Pruning, Edging,Trimming and Pruning Equipment
  • (EHS TM 28) -- Hearing Protection in the Presence of High Noise
    • Contact EHS staff for noise evaluation
    • Study USHM 6p1.
  • (EHS TM 29) -- Safety in the Use of Flammable Gases and Liquids (Non-lab environment)
  • (EHS TM 30) -- Protection from Airborne Contaminants (Non-lab evironment)
    • Study USHM 6p6. and 2p2-3, Respiratory Protection
  • (EHS TM 31) -- Safe Use of Scaffolds and Ladders
    • Study USHM 15p2. (Not required if EHS 23 or 24 have been completed.)
  • (EHS TM 32) -- Safety in the use of Vehicles and Motorized Equipment (USHM 3)
    • EHS 32a: General Vehicular Safety (Note: Required for those driving KU autos plus driver's license.)
    • EHS 32b: Safety in the Use of Trucks/Pick Ups/Trailers.
      • Study TM 32 Lessons 2 & 3 and/or applicable parts of USHM 3.
      • Exam EHS 32b
    • EHS 32c: Safety in the Use of Tractors.
      • Co-req.: EHS 32a.
      • Study TM 32 Lessons 3 & 4 and or applicable parts of USHM 3.
      • Exam EHS 32c
    • EHS 32d: Safety in the Use of Backhoes and/or
    • EHS 32e: Safety in the Use of Loaders and/or
    • EHS 32f: Safety in the Use of Bulldozers.
      • Co-req. for d, e, & f: EHS 32a.
      • For d-f, study TM32 Lessons 3, 5 & 6 and/or applicable parts of USHM 3.
      • Exam EHS 32d-f
    • EHS 32g: Safety in the Use of Mowers.
    • EHS 32h: Safety in the Use of Forklifts.
  • (EHS TM 33) -- Lock out/Tag out
  • (EHS TM 40) -- Personal Protective Equipment
